On the initiative and under the leadership of Candidate of Physico-Mathematical Sciences K. A. Lyubarsky, a debate on extraterrestrial civilizations took place, in which schoolchildren, leaders of clubs, and scientists participated on equal terms. A.V. Zasov, an employee of the P. K. Sternberg State Astronomical Institute, organized an Astronomical Olympiad, the winners of which were awarded with sets of books on astronomy.

The participants of the meeting took a tour of the Shamakhi Observatory. They were shown the observatory's largest telescope (and the second in the country), a 2-meter reflector from Zeiss (GDR), a horizontal solar telescope, 70- and 35-centimeter reflectors, and a chromospheric-photospheric telescope.

It all happened during the day. And at night... At night, the work went on as usual. Astrophotographers and planetary scientists, members of the astroclimate section, worked silently on the site at the telescopes. And quiet voices could be heard from time to time at the meteor range.:

— The number!

— The 52nd. Who will speak?

— I, AV. Magnitude three, duration 0.5, color yellow, contour 4, angular velocity 3.

"Who else?" DB, are you?

- yes. Stellar magnitude... (and so on).

— The number!

— 53rd. Who will dictate?

Let's explain the meaning of these short remarks. When a meteor flies into the field of view, each of the five observers who notice it must pronounce the word "number", to which the secretary (who is not looking at the sky) reports the serial number, records the observers who notice it in symbols (AB, DB, etc.) and records the physical properties of the meteor under the dictation of one or two of them.

Another group of meteorologists mapped the paths of meteors. The observers were lucky. They have again recorded a meteor shower, the Lyrids (with a radiant near the star Vega), discovered by Crimean astronomy enthusiasts in 1958. The stream was rich, meteors were visible to the eye up to 6th magnitude, and stars up to 6.5 magnitude! Two or three side radiants were immediately identified. The next day, the maps with the meteors, neatly redrawn, were posted for all to see.

Nearby, telescopic meteors were observed. Even further away, there were "changers" — observers of variable stars. The brilliance ratings were also heard being quietly dictated to the secretary.

Despite the richness of the scientific program of the meeting, there was still time for sports and cultural events. We played volleyball, badminton, went on excursions to the mountains, and watched movies in the evenings. On July 15, the "Azerbaijan Day" was held: the children's ensemble "Jujalyarim" performed in front of the participants. The flag of the Azerbaijan SSR was hoisted on the mast of the camp. There were no classes that day.

Needless to say, in addition to the obligatory afternoon rest, the participants in the night observations previously slept for 2-3 hours under the protection of the poster "Sleeping observer is inviolable."

In general, Baku residents showed a lot of imagination and wit in the design of the camp. The VAGO badge was chosen as the emblem of the Star City, but instead of the words "All-Union Astronomical and Geodetic Society", "The First All-Union Meeting of Young Astronomers" was written on the sides of the triangle. The names of the streets of the "Star City" are also unusual: Meteor, Kosmicheskaya, Solnechnaya, Gromovertsev Street (where the leaders lived) and others. The emblem of the constellation Aquarius was fixed next to the washbasin, "Phobos and Deimos" ("Fear and Horror") near the tent of the camp commander A.M. Aliyev, and "Gourmet Tavern" near the dining room.
